• All applications and calls will be responded to, and if a live (possibly virtual) audition is desired, the audition will be scheduled at a time convenient for both parties (the instrumentalist and auditioners Wendy Taucher/Ed Bak)

Instrumentalists required:
• Some combination of the following, four needed in total
• Violin (or viola)
• Trumpet (or horn or trombone)
• Tenor sax (or alto or bass)
• Oboe (or clarinet or bassoon)
Musical Ingredients:
• Jazz &/or classical, most but not all players must have some experience with improvisation
• One trio of three instrumentalists, with some improv (10 mintues) (titled Vistas)
• One trio of one instrumentalist with two low male voices, no improv (titled Spirits) (10 minutes)
• One quartet of the above chosen instrumentalists of arranged melodies (titled Key West Coda), some improv a possibility (10 minutes)
• Memorization mandatory
Availability:
• Players must be available from Friday April 7th, 2017 (travel day) to Sunday April 17th, 2017 (travel day)
• Virtual rehearsals or rehearsals in Key West, New York City or Boston will also take place after score/charts are provided, before arrival in Key West
• Players must be professional and not currently enrolled as an undergraduate regardless of prior professional experience
Compensation:
• Fee commensurate with professional experience
• Title of principal starring artist
• Travel RT flight to Key West (including cab fare), or RT mileage of $.555 per mile
• Housing with home stay, private room, shared bath & kitchen, provided by The Studios of Key West or their patrons
• In addition to the fee, $25 per diem a day, when in Key West including travel days

Musical Ingredients:
• Classical/jazz trio/musical theater (depending on composer/creator collaboration) vocal piece for two low (baritone & bass) male voices and one instrument (either violin, viola, sax (alto or tenor), trumpet or trombone and oboe or bassoon, based on collaborative process during the application process
• The section of the piece is called Spirits and will have lyrics in English and Spanish and will be 10 mintues in length. Spirits is loosely based on the various darker aspects of Key West history, but is not narrative or programmatic
• Composer must have experience writing vocal music but does not need to be a lyricist
• Spirits will be sung by Stefan Szkafarowsky soloist at the Metropolitan Opera and the new NYC Opera and James Martin long-time star of New York Festival of Song and Sante Fe Opera, and the Concertgebouw and accompanied by a solo instrumentalist, TBA. • There are two other musical sections, which will be arranged by Wendy Taucher and company music director Ed Bak
• Length of the entire work (including the Spirits, the 10 mintue fully composed work for which this application deals with) is one hour
Availability:
• Composer must be available to complete the work no later than March 1st, 2017
Compensation:
• Fee commensurate with professional experience
• An optional trip to Key West of TBA determined length, in order to collaborate with creators of the work, included in the compensation, but with a separate package of travel and per diem, this meeting might also take place in NYC or Martha’s Vineyard, at the expense of the Producers
• Invitation to be present week of tech/dress/performances, optional, at the expense of the Producers
• Title of principal collaborative artist
• Travel RT flight to Key West (including cab fare), or RT mileage of $.555 per mile for each trip

Description of Key West Reverie:

KEY WEST REVERIE
Key West, FL
Thursday, Friday & Saturday April 13th, 14th & 15th (Thursday, Friday & Saturday)
(five performances, two on April 13th & 14th each and one on April 15th)
A new commissioned site specific work by Wendy Taucher
Produced by The Studios of Key West with major funding from The Knight Foundation and the
National Endowment for the Arts
An immersive music and dance experience set in the West Martello Tower, a lush flora and historic
outdoor garden site. Key West Reverie features a large cast of local Key West performers and ten
professional performing artists, including dancers, vocalists and musicians from Wendy Taucher
Dance Opera Theater and elsewhere. The performers present a series of vignettes for audiences to
encounter as they explore the grounds.
Key West Reverie stars dancer KARINE PLANTADIT, a seven year soloist with Alvin Ailey American
Dance Company, original cast member of Lion King, Twyla Tharps Broadway smash Movin' Out
and as a star in other Tharp productions. Also starring are singers STEFAN
SZKAFAROWSKY (recently starred as Aleko in Aleko for the new NYCO 2016 at Lincoln Center and
a frequent Met soloist and JAMES MARTIN favorite soloist with NY Festival of Song and a veteran of
NYCO, Caramoor, Lyric Opera and prestigious companies around the world.
The work’s concept and structure is highly collaborative, a genre in which Taucher is very
experienced and creatively at home. Key West Reverie utilizes Taucher’s long professional history of
working in multiple performing arts. A New York City director/choreographer/author, she has a
degree in music from Northwestern University, where she was a horn player, and works regularly in
directing opera, choreographing shows as diverse as Blues Brothers Approved Ventures, Carly Simon,
musical theater and highly abstract modern dance. The composer/arranger will work collaboratively
with Wendy Taucher and Ed Bak and lyricist/poet Justen Ahren (Artisic Director of Noepe Literary
Arts Center, Martha’s Vineyard. Artists interested in applying as a composer must have experience
