According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Miami-area wages are now rising at pre-recession levels.
Wages in the Miami-Fort Lauderdale area rose 3.9 percent for the 12-month period ending June 2017, well ahead of the private-industry national average of 2.4 percent. However, the Miami area median wage is still last among the 15 largest metropolitan areas.
More than 400 Facebook cafeteria workers have voted to be represented by UNITE-HERE. The cafeteria workers, who are actually employed by third-party contractor Flagship Facility Services, hope unionization will lead to higher wages and more affordable health care.
A U.S district judge has dismissed a lawsuit that sought to block the Seattle ordinance allowing Uber and Lyft drivers to unionize. Seattle was, in 2015, the first city in the U.S. to give ride-hailing drivers the right to union representation. The Chamber of Commerce, representing Uber and Lyft, argued that allowing independent contractors to collude through collective bargaining violated antitrust laws. Uber plans to appeal the ruling.
