That Union Thing

SAG-AFTRA has reached a tentative agreement with the video game industry, ending a yearlong strike.

The new agreement would implement a bonus structure that provides additional payment to performers beyond their session fees. The agreement would also add some transparency in an industry that is often shrouded in secrecy and code names. Performers and their representatives would be provided more information that allows them to understand the nature of their performance better and bargain knowledgeably for fair compensation.

The NLRB has issued complaints against Spanish Broadcasting Systems (SBS), which owns two popular Los Angeles Spanish-language radio stations. Employees voted a year ago to be represented by SAG-AFTRA, which has since been negotiating for a first contract. The NLRB has issued a complaint claiming that SBS has engaged in bad faith bargaining, failed to furnish information relevant to bargaining, has interrogated and threatened employees, and terminated employees in retaliation for union activities. The NLRB is requesting that terminated employees be reinstated with back pay and interest and that SAG-AFTRA be reimbursed bargaining costs and expenses associated with SBS's bad faith bargaining. A trial has been set for December 11.
