Special Executive Board Meeting, 13 October 2005 at 10:00 am

Agenda: to discuss Symphonic Reps, RCO CBA, handling of the media, communications between Board members, and reporting to the President.

Meeting called to order at 10:15 am. Present: Walker, Roitstein, Apana, Ballard, Chandler, Emery, Levin, Warner.

Warner requested an update of the RCO status, to which Ballard replied that musicians have not been paid but an agreement was negotiated to allow musicians to cancel services with less than 14 day's notice and no loss of their first right of refusal.

Luger arrived at 10:31 am.

Levin asked what the Local's obligation to RCO musicians is, and the potential costs of our responsibilities, to which Apana noted the costs would be minimal. Apana noted the timeline surrounding the delinquency of wages.

Walker noted that if officers or staff speak to the press, the Board should be informed, and that business reps should be responsible for forwarding all information received in their departments to the Board. Ballard asked if this directive included reporting hearsay.

Walker suggested that in the future we not negotiate CBAs with organizations that may be on shaky financial ground. Roitstein remarked that we have a responsibility to protect musicians. Ballard recommended that we solicit player input on actions the Local may take against the RCO, to which Levin suggested we invite RCO members to speak to the Board. Walker suggested we send the RCO a collection letter. Walker and Levin noted that the Local may be blamed for the RCO financial difficulties, to which Luger suggested that we draft a letter to the RCO, carbon-copied to the RCO musicians, warning of our potential actions but noting our support for the continued existence of the orchestra. Walker departed at 12:25 pm. Continued discussion of the draft letter to the RCO, including that the RCO should be given 48 hours to respond, and that failing their response we should prepare a press release detailing our support for the RCO but also our responsibility to protect the musicians of the orchestra.

Discussion of representation issues. Ballard suggested that larger and more diverse committee membership would facilitate better representation of all of our members. Warner noted that any member willing to serve on a committee should be appointed to such committee and that participation will increase members' sense of ownership of the Local.

The meeting adjourned at 1:02 pm.
