Welcome, New Members!

Welcome to South Florida Musicians Association, Local 655 of the American Federation of Musicians!

You are now part of the world's largest professional association representing the interests of professional musicians. We are recording musicians, freelance musicians performing at the Kravis Center, Broward Center, Arsht Center, and local clubs, as well as members of the Palm Beach Opera orchestra, Miami City Ballet, Broadway Across America, and more.  We are part of the 80,000-member American Federation of Musicians and the 14-million-member AFL-CIO.

South Florida Musicians Association, AFM Local 655, was formed in 1913 and represents professional musicians from Key West to Vero Beach. Whether it is negotiating fair agreements, protecting ownership of recorded music, securing benefits such as health care and pension, or lobbying our legislators, South Florida Musicians Association is committed to raising industry standards and placing the professional musician in the foreground of the cultural landscape.

The American Federation of Musicians has been serving professional musicians since its founding in 1896. The American Federation of Musicians is an international governing body of Locals representing musicians within specific geographic areas. Locals negotiate minimum wage scales for Local engagements, and deal with most matters within their own regions. The Federation bargains collectively for all members involved in network radio and TV, videotape, educational TV, music videos, theatrical motion pictures, TV films and other electronic recording.

When you work under AFM agreements, you receive many benefits such as guaranteed pay rates, job security, safe working conditions, and a say in the terms and conditions of your employment.

Under the recording agreements, you also receive many backend payments such as royalties, Special Payments Fund distributions, and payments for any "new use" in a different medium. Please let us know about any sessions you performs so that ee can make a note to follow up on any missing paperwork, as missing paperwork can keep you from getting backend payments. Often musicians can make more on the backend payments than they did on the original session!
