Promo Pack Know-how

A slick promo pack is a must in competing with other bands for gigs, and there are five essential items in one: a Logo, a Bio, a Photo, a Demo Tape, and a Song list.

The Logo

This should be something that catches people's attention: make it simple and easily recognizable.  It may be just your band's name in flashy type, or it may include a graphic.

The Bio

For starters, it should have your band's name and contact information at the top.  It should describe members of the band, instrumentation, and styles performed, but keep it short.  Include brief stories about awards you've won, experiences you've had, and anything else that would draw someone's attention and separate you from other bands.

The Photo

Make it a good one; a picture can go a long way in conveying the personality of the band ("a picture is worth a thousand words…") and it can be used for ads, fliers, press releases, and newspaper articles, too.  Wear your stage clothes, include your instruments, avoid distracting backgrounds,  and let your personalities shine through.

The Demo Tape

This needs to be flawless.  Make sure that it captures your "live" sound and isn't overwhelmed with studio effects.  It should be 15-20 minutes in length and contain minute-long selections that feature the melody line and show off star performers.  Songs should represent all the styles you play.

The Rest

Include a song list (with lengths and meter readings), copies of reviews, a list of places you have played recently, business cards, and a list of upcoming performances.
