Recording Rap

Introducing...Lisa Fox

We are moving ahead in our structuring of the recording department. Having turned over the responsibility for servicing the symphonies to President Graves, I am now able to give my full effort toward the development of the recording department. This will complete the next-to-last commitment made by the Federation in the restructuring of this Local.

Vice-President Lisa Fox has already proven she is well able to handle this job; we will be looking to make additional by-law and salary adjustments once the department is fully operational.

Lisa is already addressing new claims and wherever possible reopening old ones. She has become proficient with the various record agreements, from "demos" to full masters. She is currently learning distribution and publishing and has begun one-on-one, off- the-record discussions with those who record commercials.

Within the next few weeks we will increase efforts to service the television industry musicians. This will include completing a study of Latino television production in the area. We will do nothing that may jeopardize anyone’s gig; we may, however, come up with a way to get our members more pension credits.

We are pursuing a computer program, patterned after the Federation, which will track all electronic media. In the not too distant future, the Federation will be relying on all of the Locals for its data. We not only want to be ready to deliver; we want to do it better than anyone else does.

I appreciate those of you who supported the recording activities in this Local before this trusteeship, and I thank those of you who joined in support of our efforts this past year. Now we need all of you more than ever. Just as the symphony musicians kept an open mind, working with us and allowing us to show them what we could do for them, we need to have everyone who records do the same thing. The more recording dates you can file, the better off you are. We can show you ways to record under union contracts that you never thought of, aaaaaaaaaaaaaaand……., you don’t lose the gig for trying.

I know how difficult it is to schedule meetings. Therefore, we will do just as we did with the symphony musicians: we will bring the meetings to you. We will meet anytime and anywhere, and we will maintain the on-the-record/off-the-record policy. Of course, anytime you have a recording question or problem, call Lisa. If she doesn’t have the immediate answer or solution, she will get it for you. I am committed to leaving this Local with a sound, full-service recording department.

P.S. We have the Federation’s ear regarding the non-union Latino subsidiary Labels and we will not allow this issue to die...
