Your Recording Rights

So many of us have had the following experience: you arrive at the gig and as the rehearsal or concert is about to begin, the leader informs you that the service will be recorded for future broadcast on PBS. He or she then asks you to sign a waiver of your rights for payment for this recording. What do you do?

In the first place, don’t sign the waiver! They cannot withhold your pay for the rehearsal/concert or refuse to hire you again because you do not sign. If you are still worried, just conveniently "forget" to sign it. Once you sign a waiver, there’s nothing to protect you from the recording being used and reused hundreds of times on the radio, in movies, etc. with no compensation to you. Don’t make an issue; just call us and let us handle it. We’ll protect your confidentiality while trying to get what is due to you.

Are you being paid correctly??

You play a date, are told you will be paid Union scale, but when the check arrives it seems pretty small...or you play for a CBA orchestra and you don’t know if you were paid for doubling, etc…

We can’t help you if we don’t know that something’s wrong! We have copies of all CBA’s on file; if you are ever in doubt about what you should have been paid, call us and ask. We’ll be happy to assist, and should your check be wrong, we’ll be happy to help you get what’s due, as long as a contract is on file!

American Express Grants

The Florida Philharmonic and the Miami City Ballet have each received $75,000 grants from the American Express Arts Fund. Miami City Ballet will use the money for its Hispanic Market Program and the Philharmonic will use the grant for its Beethoven by the Beach concert series.

Negotiations

The committee for the Boca Pops and negotiator Chris Durham met with management the weekend of June 26 to begin contract negotiations. The next scheduled meeting will be in July.

The Florida Philharmonic resumes negotiations July 6 and will be represented by Leonard Liebowitz.
