Cliff's Notes

Several newsletters ago I made the statement to the freelance musicians that “you guys need some marketing”, well here we go, Local 655 will be hitting the trade shows. South Florida Musicians will have a table at the “Palm Beach Party Expo 2004” on Sunday 8/22/04 from 12:00pm to 4:00pm, at the Palm Beach Crowne Plaza Hotel. We will also have a table at “Beautiful Bride 2004” (in its fifth year) on Monday 8/30/04, at the Palm Beach Marriott. ClearChannel will be advertising these events on 5 of their top Palm Beach radio stations. From past experience, I can tell you that when it comes to ClearChannel promoting a ClearChannel event, they are going to promote it like crazy.

The “Party Expo” will focus on buyers for corporate events and private parties. Obviously, the “Beautiful Bride” will focus on weddings. South Florida Musicians wants to make a really good showing, so we will need your promo. If you have band photos, CDs or DVDs, this is the time to get them to us. Mail them, email them, drop them off at the Local, just get them to us! We want to fill the back wall behind our table with a South Florida Musicians banner and photos. There will not be a stage for us to perform, but if solo musicians or duos want to stop by to do some playing at our table, it would be cool. We need to keep the volume down and we will not have electrical power, so keep it simple. Please call us if you would like to participate so we can set up a schedule to prevent train wrecks. If you would just like to work one of the tables let us know that also. We will also have several laptops with us to play and burn CDs and DVDs for possible buyers, so once again, GET US YOUR PROMO.

On another note, I was able to take some time off to take a cruise with my family. It was my first cruise experience and we had a blast. The only low point was watching some (not all) of the shows that featured lip syncing singers and dancers performing to tracks and not real musicians. Then it hit me, that the tracks were really high quality arrangements with great players. I did a little investigating and found out that the music was put together by 655 member Mike Lewis, recorded by 655 member Hal Batt and performed by Local 655 musicians. From that point on, I loved every bit of it. Hats off to Celebrity Cruise Lines for knowing where the talent is! I also had the pleasure of seeing Virgin/Narada Recording artist, violinist Doug Cameron  (Local 47) perform two shows with the ships’ 6 piece live group. Doug was excellent and the band did a great job of performing his charts. After the show I introduced myself to Doug and we had a great time talking. We spoke about his show, how he got the gig, and the ups and downs of  working with  different cruise ship bands. We touched lightly on the difficulty of working with record labels, the Union, Special Payments assessments, etc.., until my wife and kids gave me the look that it was time to get back to eating more food, drinking and having fun.

 Happy To Represent You
