Rena Blades, who formerly helped found and oversaw the Mary Brogan Museum of Arts and Sciences in Tallahassee, has been appointed President and CEO of the Palm Beach County Cultural Council.

The Miami Chamber Symphony returns after a 1-year hiatus, presenting concerts on July 17, August 17, and September 12. The concerts are sponsored in part by the Miami Dade Cultural Affairs Council with the support of the City of Coral Gables and the Music Performance Fund. Burton Dines has returned as Music Director after the departure of Leonid Sigal from that post.

The Miami String Quartet (Ivan Chang, Cathy Meng Robinson, Chauncey Patterson, Keith Robinson), ensemble in residence at Florida International University since 1997, have taken up a new post as ensemble in residence at Kent State University in Ohio. FIU has hired the Amernet String Quartet as their new ensemble in residence.

American Symphony Orchestra League, Chorus America, Opera America, and Dance/USA met jointly for the first time at the First National Performing Arts Convention in Pittsburgh this past June. One session, “Who Needs Orchestras?”, discussed the current funding plight of orchestras. Some suggestions included developing personal connections with audiences, reaching out and asking the community why organizations are not thriving, and letting funders have more input into artistic decisions.
