Sirius Satellite Radio has reached an agreement with Universal Music and Warner Music to compensate the labels for individual songs that subscribers save to their portable receivers. Sirius’ S50 device allows users to store up to 1 GB of songs on the device, much like an MP3 player.
The Screen Actors Guild, the Directors Guild of America, and the Writers Guild of America have reached an agreement with Walt Disney Company and ABC to air mobile TV content over cell phones. The agreement calls for residual payments after “mobisodes” have been available for 13 weeks.
Universal Music revenues for the first quarter of 2006 are up 8.25% over last year, and digital assets are now 10% of total revenue. EMI digital assets increased 150% over last year, and are now 5.5% of their total revenues.
Univision first quarter profits rose 21%. Univision is now ranked fifth in primetime television by Nielsen. Music sales, however, were down 24% due to a weaker release schedule.
The FCC has launched a payola probe of Clear Channel Communications, CBS Radio, Entercom Communications, and Citadel Broadcasting.
Symphony
The National Endowment for the Arts survey conducted in 2002 found that almost 23% of national classical music audiences were under age 34, and over 42% were under age 44. Opera audiences were found to be even younger.
The San Francisco Symphony has released a series of DVDs, in conjunction with PBS specials, that combine performances music education. The series, “Keeping Score,” gives a behind-the-scenes look at how the orchestra works, including interviews with individual musicians.
