That Union Thing

SAG and AFTRA have agreed to a 6-month extension of their commercials contract. The extension will give SAG more time to resolve its negotiations for a new television and film contract, which expired June 30.

Broward County school teachers protested their lack of a contract despite giving their "soles"to education, alongside thousands of tattered slippers, shoes, and flip-flops. Teachers have begun "working to rule," meaning working for no more and no less than their required 7.5 hours a day, eliminating volunteering, field trips, teacher "homework," and other activities they had previously done outside of their regular scheduled workday. Broward Schools Superintendent Jim Notter has defended the school board's position, noting that Florida is 50th in the nation in state funding of education.

The National Labor Relations Board has filed a compliant against Nova Southeastern University, alleging that the University interfered with its maintenance workers' unionization efforts. A hearing will be held in Miami in November.

Florida's unemployment rate is catching up with its inflation rate. The Florida unemployment rate for July was 6.5 percent, higher than the national rate of 6.1 percent and the highest rate in Florida since 1995. South Florida has also topped the charts in inflation for the past two years. And to add insult to injury, the U.S. Census Bureau reports that a third of south Florida homeowners spend more than half their paychecks on housing. In the past 8 years, Broward and Palm Beach counties have gone from being one of the most affordable places to live in the country to one of the least affordable, according to Miami housing analyst Lew Goodkin.
