Broadway had a record-breaking season. Revenue increased to $1.14 billion, largely due to increased ticket prices. Tourists accounted for over 63% of tickets sold, and the overwhelming majority of shows seen were musicals.

SEIU members have authorized a strike against Broadway theaters. The contract covering cleaners, porters, and other service workers expired on December 30, and the primary dispute is over healthcare benefits.


Hollywood earned a record $10.8 billion at the box office in 2012, an increase of more than $1 billion over the previous year.

University of Miami School of Music Dean Shelly Berg has been nominated for a Grammy. His song "Out There" has been nominated in the Best Instrumental Arrangement, Accompanying Vocalist category.

Songwriter Desmond Child and producer Rudy Perez have founded the Latin Songwriters Hall of Fame to honor Spanish- and Portugese-language songwriters. The Hall, which is looking for a home in Miami, was launched on December 4 and will induct its first five honorees on April 23, 2013.


The Miami City Ballet has received $5 million from the Knight Foundation. The grant, which will be paid in $1 million installments over 5 years, will be used to pay for expanding its repertoire, commissioning new works, and adding more programs for young people.

Musicians of the Orlando Philharmonic have ratified their first collective bargaining agreement. The new four-year agreement raises pay 4.55 percent in the first year and includes standardized AFM recording language. The contract will be reopened in early 2013 to negotiate wages for the final three years of the agreement.

Florida Grand Opera has appointed Zoe Zeniodi as assistant conductor. Zeniodi received doctorates from the University of Miami Frost School of Music in 2010 and 2011.

The Metropolitan Opera will be selling $100 million in bonds to repay its $63.2 million in loans. Last season the Opera saw an 8 percent dop in revenue, its first decline in years.
