That Union Thing

Musicians of the Vermont Symphony have voted to unionize.

They voted 59 to 10 in favor of being represented by the Boston Local of the AFM. One of the reasons for the vote was a decision by the orchestra to cut one of the season's five masterworks concerts, done with no input from the musicians.

The new Trump tax law may hurt some musicians. The law eliminates miscellaneous deductions including unreimbursed business expenses, which is used by many musicians for audition travel, supplies, fees, and additional training. The law does benefit large media companies and movie studios, who will see their corporate tax rate cut from 35 percent to 21 percent. The Motion Picture Association of America estimates that will save its members over $5 billion.
