Last Month at the Local

Last month we visited with about 40 freshmen members of the New World Symphony. President Reskin was joined by AFM Symphonic Services Director Rochelle Skolnick, AFM Symphonic Electronic Media Director Debbie Newmark, ICSOM chair Meredith Snow, ROPA president Mike Smith, and Palm Beach Opera Orchestra Committee chair and ROPA board member Kendra Hawley.

After introductions and explanations of the panelists' positions and areas of concern, we discussed many of the basic functions and roles the AFM plays in serving its members and the community of professional musicians in general. The panelists answered many important questions from the students, and presented examples of hypothetical problems that might arise in a professional symphony orchestra. They also discussed the role of the Orchestra Committee and the Local, and what steps are involved in addressing issues. The fellows' reception for us was quite warm and enthusiastic, and we stayed well after the session to address individual questions. With presentations such as this we hope to spark an interest in the AFM among young musicians and guide them to understanding the importance of working together to address workplace concerns.
