Musicians Stage Pop-up Protest at South Florida Symphony concert

On Tuesday April 16, a few musicians of the South Florida Symphony staged a pop-up protest at the Symphony's concert at the Broward Center.

In a showing of support, the musicians were joined by members of South Florida Musicians Association, Local 655 AFM and by members of IATSE Local 500. The musicians were protesting late payment of wages, which are still unpaid after three months. The Symphony has given no indication of when musicians will receive checks. Many musicians are still owed wages for the January production of Porgy and Bess, as well as the February and March concert sets. It is unclear when the musicians who performed Tuesday night's concert will be paid.

This is the fourth time in the past several years that musicians have had to wait for paychecks. Musicians who perfomed for the Symphony in 2010 had to wait as long as two years before they were paid. In 2013 the musicians waited as long as eight months before being paid. The last time the Symphony had difficulty paying musicians was in 2015.

Musicians are strongly encouraged to refuse to play for the South Florida Symphony until musicians are paid.
