Last Month at the Local

Last month members of the Palm Beach Opera orchestra audition committee discussed a request to make an appointment to fill a vacancy.

Normally all vacancies are filled by audition, as will be the case with the violin and cello auditions that are taking place this May. If there is someone who has proven themselves to be an asset when subbing, the Opera and the musicians can agree to make an appointment instead of holding an audition, if both sides agree. We are happy to announce that Local 655 member Katherine Rodriguez has been appointed to fill the trombone vacancy at the Opera. Congratulations, Katherine.

Our contract with Palm Beach Opera expires in May, and the orchestra committee has started preparing for negotiations. Musicians in the Opera orchestra have been surveyed about what they would like to see changed in the contract, and the committee is reviewing the survey results in order to prepare a contract proposal. We will be assisted in this negotiation by AFM negotiator Todd Jelen, who has assisted us in previous negotiations with the Opera. We expect negotiations to take place over the summer.
