The Consumer Price Index for south Florida for May and June rose at a 4.4 percent annual rate, more than other metropolitan areas including Chicago and Los Angeles, and significantly more than the national rate of 2.7 percent. The biggest reasons for the increase include high transportation and housing costs. South Florida also held the dubious honor of the highest CPI increase in the nation more than once last year, when inflation in south Florida rose as high as 6.1 percent.
By a four-to-one margin, nearly one thousand casino workers in Atlantic City, New Jersey voted to be represented by the United Auto Workers (UAW). They join dealers at Caesars, Bally's, and Trump Plaza who earlier this year also voted for union representation. One of the concerns of those voting was lack of health care coverage or other benefits.
