I got an e-mail and a phone call this week from a principal string player in this season's Florida Grand Opera replacement orchestra. He took the job despite our warnings about lack of job security at FGO. He assumed that he was secure enough to not have to worry about being fired. Apparently he was wrong.

The Screen Actors Guild has reached a tentative agreement with movie and television studios. The agreement would run through June 2011, putting SAG back at the bargaining table at the same time writers' and directors' unions would be negotiating new contracts.05/01/09 Local and Industry News
The states of Oregon and Montana have recently passed laws that classify musicians working in nightclubs and bars as independent contractors. Previously, in both states, musicians were classified as employees of the venues and subect to workers compensation and unemployment tax.
