Last Month at the Local

Palm Beach Opera musicians have elected a new orchestra committee. Greg Miller joins returning committee members Eric Ohlsson, Laura Winters, Jody Yanow, and Laura Miller. Additionally, Katherine Rodriguez was elected ROPA Delegate. The committee will also serve as negotiating committee as the contract expires in May.

We are currently monitoring the parking situation at the Kravis Center, which has recently begun to charge for parking. Initial reports indicated that the Center was providing parking vouchers to performers. When Palm Beach Opera musicians began their production at the Kravis Center, they were told that they would instead be given a discount code. We contacted Palm Beach Opera, and reached out to a few additional organizations about their parking experience. Our understanding is that the discount code resulted in free parking for Opera musicians. If you have Kravis parking experiences that you’d like to share with us, please contact the Local office. Our goal is to ensure that there is consistent free parking for performers.

At the end of the month, the Local received a visit from our AFM International Representative Aaron Lack. Lack was here to audit the Local and make sure it was complying with minimum standards, as well as to meet with officers and discuss concerns. The International Representatives are uniquely positioned to facilitate sharing information, as they make regular visits to all of the Locals in their region. Working together and sharing information is how we strengthen the AFM for all musicians, regardless of where they are located.
