Starbucks workers called for a boycott of Starbucks this past August. Workers unionized five years ago and are still waiting to reach agreement on their first contract. Workers are concerned about grueling schedules of 12-hour shifts that alternate between day and night shifts, as well as quotas, health and safety issues, and nonfunctioning machinery. The plant is one of two solar-grade polysilicon plants in the U.S., and was built in part due to $325 million in funding from the federal government.
Walmart workers Ontario have their first union contract. Agreement on a two-year contract was reached two years after workers voted for union representation. The agreement includes a raise and backpay. They also have disciplinary procedure protections.
